I would love to read something that is going to shatter my heart then put all the pieces back together better than new. I LOVE heartache and hurt/comfort, as long as the MCs aren't hurting EACHOTHER in an 'I'll hurt you, then make it all better, then hurt you again' mentality. But it's perfectly fine if the MCs don't really even get together in the first book (if it's a series). I really like organic slow burns (as long as it's SLOW and not NO burn). If there is explicit sex (again, not required), I STRONGLY prefer that both men be enthusiastically versatile with each other. But most if not all sex scenes should advance the story (story>sex) Steam level doesn't matter, though it might be nice if there's some. A coming out moment, gay/bi awakening, gfy or bfy, or theme of overcoming homophobia are all fine if handled well (keyword: well), or if being queer is just accepted and normal within the world, that's great too.
I want to be able to love both guys, even while they hate eachother) It doesn't really matter to me whether or not the queerness of the MCs plays a significant role in the story. But if they start out morally gray, by the end of the book/series I want to consider them good loveable people. I'd like both characters to be loveable! They can and should have their issues they shouldn't be perfect. (This may seem very obvious, but there are a shocking number of books whose authors try to pass them off as "happy endings" that fulfill very few of these criteria) I can handle some violence and darker themes, but please no grimdark! I don't want the MC(s) to endure so much torture, suffering, and trauma that the HEA doesn't feel believable. A HEA is an absolute must, and to me, HEA means that both men end up alive, happy, healthy, together, and madly in love with eachother. I'd prefer a fantasy, sci-fi, or action/thriller- basically any speculative fiction.
I'm a queer man looking for a book/series with a significant romantic arc between 2 men, but isn't specifically a romance novel. I'll probably post this on both the fantasy and MM romance subreddits. Okay, buckle up for a lengthy book request. TL DR Main priorities: Fun adventure story, 2 vers dudes fall in love, and after some laughter and tears, they live happily ever after.
