However, I found that, like War and Peace, its great length became a virtue quite quickly. It is enormous, much like Tolstoy’s other famous work ‘ War and Peace‘ which I read a couple of years ago.

But I can give you a few thoughts on the novel and why you should give it a try. Some thoughts I had reading Anna KareninaĪs with other great classics, I don’t think I would dare to ‘review’ ‘Anna Karenina’ in the traditional sense. Even with his grumpiness, Levin is now one of my favourite literary characters of all time.Īpparently you’re either a Petersburg or a Moscow sort of person, in ‘Anna Karenina’. This is the love story between Kitty, a young debutante, and Levin, a grouchy nobleman who, despite obsessing over how to improve his farm and life for those who work in it, is hopelessly in love with her. Unsurprisingly, as news of their dalliance spreads Anna comes to be seen as a ‘fallen woman’, with grave consequences for herself and those around her.Īlthough the novel’s name would make out that the story belongs solely to Anna, there is also another storyline of equal importance running through the novel. The novel is set in the parlours and ballrooms of 19th century Russian society. Here, he tells the story of Anna, a married woman seduced by the handsome Count Vronsky. He is often considered to be one of the most important authors of all time.

If you’re in the market for a quick recap, it is an enormous novel by Leo Tolstoy. You will certainly know about ‘Anna Karenina’ already. Firstly because I’ve been reading it for a long time, so it seemed chronologically right, and secondly because I’m really excited to get into it on the blog. So, it’s especially lovely to come back to the blog today after some time away and look back on everything I’ve read over the last few weeks. I have still been reading lots, but haven’t really had time to sit down and write reviews.

Considering that getting through January usually feels like walking through treacle, I’m quite pleased at how quickly this most boring of months has sped by. Over the last few weeks I’ve started a brand new job, sat a translation exam and started looking for a new flat. Phew! It’s been a mad couple of weeks (hence the radio silence, sorry all).
